Ingredients

  • 2 large onions

  • 1 cup all purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

Directions

  • 1. Peel the onions and cut them into 1/2 inch thick slices, then carefully separate them into individual petals.
  • 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • 3. In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk and egg, whisking until smooth.
  • 4. Pour the vegetable oil into a deep pot and heat to 180C (350F), using a thermometer for accuracy.
  • 5. Dip each onion petal first into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and finally back into the flour mixture to ensure a thick, even coating.
  • 6. Working in batches to avoid crowding, gently lower the coated onions into the hot oil and fry for 2 to 3 minutes until they turn deep golden brown and crispy.
  • 7. Use a slotted spoon to remove the bites and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • 8. For the dipping sauce, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, and garlic powder in a small bowl until fully blended and smooth.
  • 9. Serve the onion bites immediately while hot, accompanied by the dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For a substitution, use regular milk mixed with a splash of vinegar instead of buttermilk. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days; reheat in a preheated oven at 200C (400F) for 5 to 7 minutes to regain crispiness. These bites are perfect as a starter for game day gatherings or as a fun snack alongside grilled meats and cold beverages.
